Saints were in Group K along with Italy’s Inter Milan, the Czech Republic’s Sparta Prague and Israel’s Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
- Match 1 - Southampton v Sparta Prague
15th September 2016 - Win 3-0 - Match 2 - Hapoel Be’er Sheva v Southampton
29th September 2016 - Draw 0-0 - Match 3 - Internazionale v Southampton
20th October 2016 - Lost 1-0 - Match 4 - Southampton v Internazionale
3rd November 2016 - Won 2-1 - Match 5 - Sparta Prague v Southampton
24th November 2016 - Lost 1-0 - Match 6 - Southampton v Hapoel Be’er Sheva
8th December 2016 - Draw 1-1
And so Saints went out of the Europa League competition, without managing to make the knockout stage of the competition. The went into the last leg of the legue stages needing to win, or a goalless draw. Goal difference does not count in this competition and as we only drew 0-0 with Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel any sort of score draw would see the Israeli side go through, which is exactly what happened.
This was a result that angered, as it was not as if the opposition was not beatable, it was just the rather tame manner of the exit that rankled.
Still, it will have given the club the taste for European competition.
